Product Description
In 1991 Waterford introduced Marquis, the first new brand in the 200-year history of the company. Its mission is to offer clean, elegant designs that suit the modern lifestyle. Simple enough for everyday dinner use, it's also the perfect complement to fine china and silver for the most special occasions. Each style is available as a set of four. Shown left to right: white wine, light red wine, champagne flute, deep red wine.

Amazon.com Review
For more than 200 years, Waterford has created exceptional crystal admired around the world. In 1991, Waterford and Marquis united to create simpler, more modern designs of equal quality and beauty. The Waterford Marquis Vintage collection showcases classical shapes, while ensuring a contemporary and casual feel that can be used for any occasion.

This set of four 19-1/2-ounce Marquis Vintage deep red wine glasses each stand 8-3/4 inches tall. With an elongated bowl that narrows slightly toward the mouth, this set is specifically proportioned for heavier wines, such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, or syrah. The shape of the bowl allows the wine to breathe properly and for the aroma to be appreciated to its full extent. Waterford recommends washing all fine crystal by hand in moderately hot water with a mixture of mild lemon detergent and ammonia in order to preserve the quality and brilliance of the crystal for many years. In addition, always store crystal stemware upright in order to prevent chipping. --Lea Werbel

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value   May 8, 2003

I bought four of the Deep Red Wine Glasses approximately 4 years ago and contrary to what the previous reviewer says I have not noticed any special susceptibility to chipping. Mine are in fine shape - though I have NEVER washed them in the dishwasher (always hand washed).

These are not hand blown glasses as more expensive stemware is, but they have a very nice shaped and a relatively thin bowl. The crystal maintains a nice "ring" to it and has a pleasant feel. For the money, these are excellent glasses. I'll be buying another set as I accidentally knocked one glass of my current set off my kitchen counter.

If you're drinking a variety of wine out of the same plain glass (i.e., not crystal) wine glass, I can not stress (though I was dubious at first) what a difference it makes to 1) drink out of crystal, and 2)to match the wine your drinking to the bowl and shape of the stemware. Though not high-end or as specialized as Reidel or Spieglau (or Waterford, for that matter), these glasses are VERY serviceable, indeed.

These are our 'everyday' red wine glasses and we love them. They feel substantial yet elegant.

4 out of 5 stars nice glasses; very like reidel   January 14, 2009

Instead of the usual ornately cut glass that you expect from Waterford, these are thin, simple, and elegant. The shapes are well chosen, and they feel very like reidels. However, a close examination will discover a mold mark down the center of each stem, and a joint where the base meets the molded stem. For this price, I would expect the construction to be a little better.

I love these red wine glasses - they are beautiful and thin yet fairly sturdy for crystal. Bowl is perfect for gathering and wafting the scent of your good red wines up to your nose.

3 out of 5 stars Waterford's Marquis line of stemware...   January 9, 2003

I bought two (2) sets (8 glasses total) of the Deep Red Wine stemware. The glasses are beautiful, and have the shape and feel of Riedel in many respects.

I must say they chip rather easily, compared to experiences with stemware manufactured by more prestigous companies. Word to the wise--don't put these in a dishwasher. My partner did this, thinking that because it wasn't a 'different' brand name, that they were somehow inferior and thus hardier against the jets. Treat these just like Riedel.

The glasses have a great feel in the hand, and the graft where the stem meets the base is smooth and well polished. The lip of the glass also more than passes muster, it's a sharp edged rim that typically tells the difference between good glasses and bad.

My overall recommendation is that unless your mission with entertaining is to impress with implements (rather than with the wine, the food, the host, etc.), buy these for even the best occasions over Riedel, given that these are nearly half the cost. I believe they offer an equivalent drinking experience.
